Anna Atkins (1799 - 1871) was an English photographer and botanist. The native seaweeds depicted on these notecards were drawn from her series "Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions," the first installment of which was published in 1843. Privately published, it is widely considered to be the first book illustrated with photographs. These images were selected from the extensive digital collection made available at the Rijksmuseum.
